The new federal Constituency Youth Council (CYC) of Hastings—Lennox and Addington met with MP Mike Bossio recently at Napanee District Secondary School. This council will meet once every 1 to 2 months to discuss what matters most to them. During this time, community projects will be organized to mobilize the community and make a positive impact.
Matthew Thompson of Newburgh, a returning council member from the previous year said that last year “the CYC was a great opportunity to have my voice heard and to engage in meaningful discussion. Travelling to Ottawa with Mike was the experience of a lifetime, particularly being able to see Parliament from the inside.”
The topics that were of most interest to the group at their first meeting were education, foreign affairs, and the environment.
Plans are underway to get out into the community to explore these topics through projects that will examine the issues more fully. These projects will be followed by an opportunity to meet with MP Mike Bossio to discuss what was learned and the possible solutions from the perspective of the CYC.
The CYC is a non-partisan council now in its second year that will focus on bringing a diverse set of perspectives to the conversation. Bossio will have the opportunity to hear fresh new perspectives and ideas, and participants will be able to better understand the federal political process and gain valuable leadership experience.
With eight returning council members and eleven new members from Bancroft to Napanee, the year promises to be a dynamic one. As new member Zach Walker, a Centre Hastings Secondary Student, put it: “it is the opportunity I, as a Canadian youth, need to participate in.”
