MP Bossio Joins Hastings Dairy Producers to Thank Canadians

🐄🌱🍎 Whether in the dairy sector, beef, or any of our other family farms, the farmers in our communities need to know that they have a local MP who understands and supports their industry, and who is a strong voice to champion their interests in Ottawa. I will always support our family farms and the quality food that they produce.Agriculture is a strong economic driver in Hastings—Lennox and Addington. The most recent census data shows the dairy sector at the top in both counties of the riding, with farm cash receipts of $20.35 million in Hastings County and $16.34 million in L&A County. Stirling, ON – Local dairy farmers are saying “thank you” to Canadians in a big way for their ongoing support – on a billboard along the busy highway 62.

“We’ve gone through these various trade deals, and there’s a lot of rhetoric that goes back and forth, some of it negative,” said Carl Coates, Vice Chair of the Hastings County Dairy Producers.

“We decided that we wanted to emphasize buying Canadian and supporting your rural economy. As a dairy committee for Hastings County, we decided to put up this sign to say thank you to the people who have supported us through thick and thin. And we thank them as well by ensuring we spend our dollars locally,” added Coates.

The billboard has been put up at the Donnan family farm along Hwy 62 between Belleville and Madoc.

“It doesn’t get more sustainable for our rural communities than the dairy sector and supply management,” said local Liberal MP Mike Bossio, who was invited to the unveiling. “The dairy sector in Hastings—Lennox and Addington alone supports over 1,400 full time jobs and contributes over $116 million in economic activity to Canada’s GDP.”

From providing up to $3.9 billion in support for supply-managed farmers to protect the value of their investments, to introducing a Food Policy for Canada that sets out a coordinated and collaborative approach to addressing food-related issues, the Government of Canada is ensuring that the country’s agricultural sector will continue to be the pride of rural Canada that it has always been.
