Ottawa, ON – The Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs has recently begun a 5-day study across Canada to study land claim agreements.
The Committee will be holding public hearings to gain a better understanding of the issues that affect the negotiation and implementation of specific claims and comprehensive claims (including self-government agreements) and to better understand the outcomes for Indigenous communities.
The study will take the Committee across Canada, with stops in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Quebec City, and Belleville, Ontario. During the stop in Belleville, the Committee will be meeting with a number of Indigenous leaders and organizations from across Ontario. The trip will end on Friday with a visit to Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory from 2 – 4 PM, where MPs will have an opportunity to meet with Chief R. Donald Maracle and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Council to discuss how longstanding land claim issues have affected inhabitants of both the territory and the surrounding area.
“I am looking forward to welcoming the committee to our riding, so that they can meet with members of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte,” said Bossio. “When we have cross-country consultations with Indigenous peoples, it is important for me as the MP for our region to ensure that the viewpoint of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte is brought to the table.”
Upon completion of the trip, the Committee will continue to study the issue throughout the fall. Those interested in submitting a brief or a comment can do so online though the Committee’s website: http://www.ourcommons.ca/Committees/en/INAN or by contacting the Committee Clerk at INAN@parl.gc.ca.
Bossio will be joined on the trip by other members of the Liberal Caucus, as well as members of the Conservative Caucus and the NDP Caucus.
